Chrissy Teigen
According to the Office of Women’s Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one in 9 new mothers has postpartum depression. After childbirth, women experience feelings of sadness that can be severe and last longer than the common mood changes and exhaustion felt within the first two weeks after having a baby. In 2017, Chrissy Teigen shared her experience in an interview about giving birth and resulting in postpartum depression. As a model, author, and television personality, and widely known as John Legend’s wife, Chrissy Teigen’s story struck the public realm and encouraged others with depression and mental health needs to seek support.
After months of struggling to understand her upset and detachment, she was diagnosed during a physical with postpartum depression and anxiety. She verified many symptoms associated with depression, such as pain, sedentary habits, sleep disturbance, lack of enjoyment and energy, and isolation. With support and understanding, she informed many people involved in her life, which she felt made it easier to accept within herself.
Chrissy has shared her experience to enlighten others so they do not feel embarrassed or isolated as seeking support and being open can be a vital part of the healing process. Her story can help others with similar emotions and experiences to reach out for help. Like most mental health conditions, postpartum depression is aligned with many stigmas that have an even further detrimental effect on women. With this, it is important to create a safe space for discussion of this topic as well as increase advocacy to dismantle negative associations of mental health experiences.
