Selena Gomez
If you were born in the late 1990s or the early 2000s in the United States, Selena Gomez most likely played a role in your childhood. Gomez was once the face of Disney Channel with her popular TV show “Wizards of Waverly Place,” which I will always remember the theme song to. She also acted in many other TV shows and films such as “Monte Carlo,” “Spring Breakers,” and “Hotel Transylvania.” In addition to being a famous actor, Gomez is also a successful singer, model, and businesswoman.
What people are less likely to know is that Gomez has been struggling with mental health issues for many years. Even though Gomez grew up in the spotlight, she experienced significant and debilitating depression and anxiety. In an interview with WSJ Magazine, she shared, “My highs were really high, and my lows would take me out for weeks at a time. I found out I do suffer from mental health issues. And, honestly, that was such a relief.” By finally addressing and talking about her issues, the Disney star was able to classify her condition and receive necessary treatment that greatly helped her mental health position. Also, Gomez shared that by labeling her problems as a mental health issue, she was encouraged to find people in her life that would understand and support her in her struggles.
In July of 2020, Gomez broadcasted her new initiative: the Rare Impact Fund. The Rare Impact Fund is dedicated to raising $100 million to provide underprivileged populations with better mental health treatment and resources. Additionally, in September of 2020, Gomez launched a makeup brand called Rare Beauty that promotes mental health and well-being. The makeup brand is 100% vegan and cruelty-free and all advertisements include diverse and real-life imagery. The goal of the company is to call attention to the widespread and unrealistic body standards that we as a society idolize and to promote body positivity and overall well-being. Selena Gomez is a leader for the mental health community as her honest and active efforts to destigmatize mental health will hopefully enlighten and inform millions of individuals around the world.
